The Sabor Blog

News, Events & Stories from the Latino Community across the U.S.

SPECIAL GUEST BLOG: What do salsa, city council members, nonprofit executive directors and a member of Congress have in common?

On March 24th I had the pleasure of meeting Sacramento community members who gathered at the Sacramento Public Library to hear about the upcoming American Sabor exhibition.  Following a preview of the website and the planned community and education programs, the room was charged with excitement as people began to see the possibilities this exhibition will bring to Sacramento.

At Ford we support arts and cultural programs because we see them as powerful education tools that help enrich lives and build communities.  We help build communities by developing  Local Communities of Honor, or honorary committees of community leaders, elected officials and educators who endorse these cultural initiatives. These local ambassadors help spread the word about the exhibition and its education and community programs. This is a critical piece to engaging a wide range of audiences.

The Community of Honor Luncheon at the Sacramento Public Library.Here are some of the outstanding ways the Sacramento community has offered to spread the word about American Sabor:

  • City Council members offered to distribute flyers about the exhibition;
  • The Consul General of Mexico will be helping get the word out to the Mexican community in Sacramento;
  • Local nonprofits expressed interest in holding mixers for their members at the library and to reach out to their media contacts to ask them to promote the exhibition;
  • Educators are looking at ways to incorporate the educational materials in local classrooms;

This is only the beginning.

At Ford, we are counting the days until we are back at the Sacramento Public Library on May 25 for the opening of American Sabor and the launch of its national tour.

We visited the Library on May

We visited the Library on May 25 th to see the American Sabor exhibit and a gentleman with a camera asked us if he could take some pictures of us while we were looking at the exhibits.I would like to know who he was and where can we see the pictures as he said they would be on La Voz newspaper which is a hispanic newspaper. Any assistance would be appreciated. We enjoyed the exhibit very much.

My sister and I were very

My sister and I were very excited about seeing the Sabor Exhibit in Sacramento, CA. We saw the beautiful brochure and went to the website. We were there on Saturday, June 25 ready for a great experience and were extremely dissapointed. The "exhibit" consisted of panels with photos and captions crowded into the panels and the choice of pushing buttons to listen to the music. Nobody was around.

We walked around hoping that there would be more and finally asked one person at the desk if that was all there was to it. She said: "Yes, that's all the Smithsonian sent us. We had a mariachi band here a few days ago..." We walked out feeling a bit foolish. Your brochure and collaterals are deceiving as to what to expect. Latino music deserves much more than this.

We are Latinas who love music and we've traveled to Washington D.C. several times and have enjoyed the Smithsonian there. I'm also a member of the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco and travel there to enjoy the exhibits. I already let my family and friends know not to waste their time attending this "exhibit."

Thank you for your comment.

Thank you for your comment. I’m sorry that you were disappointed during your visit. The exhibition on view at the Sacramento Public Library is a smaller version of an exhibit that is traveling to large museums across the country. We wanted to extend the reach of the American Sabor exhibit to a wider audience so we created an exhibit that could be hosted by smaller organizations such as libraries with the goal to make it more accessible to the public. In addition, each host organization is able to develop public programs where visitors may experience the vitality of Latin music first hand. I hope you will take advantage of the concerts and programs developed by the Sacramento Public Library. Check out the schedule of events under Exhibition Tour information on the right side of the home page.
